Program: Growing up Gay in the 21st Century:
Challenges Confronting GLBT Youth in & Out of the Classroom
On May 15th, we will hear from a panel of folks who live and work with
the issues affecting GLBT youth. Annette Green, of Gay Straight Advocates For
Education (GSAFE), will address the mission and activities of GSAFE and the
creation of a new offshoot called YouthSafe. The mission of GSAFE includes:
- Providing for the promotion of a public policy by which schools are alleviated from discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression so that all students, faculty, staff and other school community members are made physically and emotionally safe;
- Providing resources which address the educational, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs and wants of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender youth and their allies; and
- Providing for the furtherance of the goals of valuing and respecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons in educational environments.
Ashley Felts will provide a student perspective on the issues confronting high school students today.
Ian Palmquist, will discuss the challenges of getting a NC anti-bullying policy passed. Such a policy would specifically enumerate banned categories of harassment and bullying in order to establish a floor of protections for students.
Were you out when you were in high school? What was it like for you? How has it changed? Come out and hear the good, the bad and the ugly about growing up gay in the 21st century!
The evening will begin with a networking cocktail/social hour at 6:00
pm. Dinner will be served at 7:00 pm.
